In an effort to enhance the implementation of newborn screening (NBS) and newborn hearing screening programs in CALABARZON, the Department of Health Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) IV-A conducted a series of alignment meetings, training sessions, and forums from February to March 2025. These initiatives aimed to equip healthcare professionals with the necessary knowledge and skills to improve early detection and intervention for newborn genetic disorders.

Program Alignment Meeting: Strengthening Provincial and City Coordination

On February 19, 2025, provincial and city coordinators gathered at The Cocoon Hotel, Quezon City, for the Newborn Screening and Newborn Hearing Screening Program Alignment Meeting. The event, led by Dr. Monica Stephanie Moreno, opened with discussions on program updates, procurement processes, and screening coverage. Mr. Jose Antonio Yap, project development officer III, presented the achievements and key activities for the year, while Ms. Shirleen Micosa of the Newborn Screening Center – South Luzon (NSC-SL) reported on unsatisfactory rates and areas for improvement. The meeting set the stage for improved collaboration among stakeholders, ensuring better service delivery across the region.

Training on Expanded Newborn Screening and Heel-Prick Method

Recognizing the importance of hands-on training, the DOH-CHD IV-A organized multiple sessions focusing on the Expanded Newborn Screening (ENBS). The first training took place on February 27, 2025, at the Hotel Marciano, Calamba City, Laguna that provided healthcare workers with lectures on NBS procedures,  screening methodologies, and follow-up protocols.

A practicum on the heel-prick method followed on February 28, 2025, at the Dr. J.P. Rizal Memorial District Hospital. This hands-on session allowed nurses, midwives, and medical technologists to practice blood sample collection under the supervision of experienced professionals, including Mr. Jose Antonio Yap, Ms. Jhoanna Gatbonton, and Ms. Shirleen Micosa. This essential skill is critical for detecting metabolic, genetic, and endocrine disorders in newborns, ensuring early intervention and better health outcomes.

In-House Training Expands Reach to Local Health Centers

To strengthen NBS implementation at the community level, an In-House Training on Expanded Newborn Screening will be conducted on March 2025, at the San Pascual Super Health Center in Batangas. Local healthcare workers will be trained in screening techniques and the expanded NBS panel of disorders, enhancing their capacity to detect and manage newborn genetic disorders within their localities.
