Celebrating 30 Years of Newborn Screening in the Philippines

For 30 years, the Newborn Screening Program in the Philippines has helped give Filipino children a healthier start in life. Since its introduction as a pilot study in 1996, newborn screening has enabled the early detection of serious but treatable conditions through a simple test performed shortly after birth. By identifying these conditions early, healthcare providers can ensure timely management and care—preventing lifelong disabilities and improving health outcomes for thousands of children across the country.

As we celebrate this milestone, the theme “From Screening to Better Outcomes” reflects the program’s continued commitment to protecting every Filipino newborn. This anniversary honors the dedication of healthcare workers, partners, and families who support newborn screening and highlights the shared goal of ensuring that every child has the opportunity to grow, thrive, and live a healthy life.

Newborn Screening Coverage

Newborn Screening is now available in more than 7,000 newborn screening facilities (NSFs) in the country. The samples collected from the health facilities are then sent to their respective Newborn Screening Centers (NSCs). Newborns with confirmed positive screens are referred to the Newborn Screening Continuity Clinics (NBSCC) and satellite clinics. Use our map to locate NSFs, NSCs, NBSCCs, and other institutions in the Newborn Screening network.
