On April 21, 2025, an orientation on the guidelines for Newborn Screening (NBS) was held in Basilan, highlighting the importance of early detection and timely intervention to safeguard the health of newborns.
The orientation was led by Regional NBS Coordinator Sheridan Sampulna, who emphasized the vital role of frontline health workers in ensuring the success of the NBS program. She also discussed the importance of accurate reporting, proper kit storage, and active community engagement to help improve health outcomes for newborns across the province.
In addition to the orientation, NBS kits were distributed to key healthcare facilities. The Provincial Health Office of Basilan received a total of 1,000 NBS kits, while 350 kits were allocated to the City Health Office of Lamitan. Eleven rural health units across the province also received supplies to support the program’s implementation in their respective communities.
This initiative demonstrates the continuing commitment of the Department of Health and its partners to strengthen NBS implementation in the region. By equipping health facilities and capacitating healthcare workers, the program aims to ensure that every child in Basilan has access to life-saving health services from the beginning of life.
