The Newborn Screening Center – National Institutes of Health (NSC-NIH) recently welcomed colleagues for exposure activities designed to deepen their appreciation of both the technical and administrative aspects of the newborn screening program. These activities highlight the center’s continuous commitment to learning, collaboration, and building stronger partnerships for the benefit of Filipino newborns and their families.

Dr. Celenia-Jo S. Cagata, clinical geneticist, visited the NSC-NIH and observed its daily operations, including that of the Program and Administrative Section and Laboratory Section, and focused on the Follow-up Section with special attention to patient recall processes. This hands-on experience allowed her to work closely with the Follow-up Team and gain practical insights into ensuring timely care and management of positive screened cases.

The NSC-NIH also welcomed Ena Ruth Flores and Jezzel Faith Arizaleta, newly appointed newborn screening coordinators from the Metro Manila Center for Health Development (MMCHD). They were oriented firsthand on how laboratory processes, setups, and administrative systems come together to support newborn screening services. The visit also emphasized ways to help lower the rate of unsatisfactory samples and ensure timely patient recall, both of which are vital to the success of the program.

By opening its doors and sharing experiences, the NSC-NIH continues to foster a culture of teamwork, knowledge exchange, and mutual support. The center looks forward to working hand in hand with colleagues across regions to ensure that every newborn has the best start in life.
