The Newborn Screening Center-National Institutes of Health (NSC-NIH) welcomed an exposure trip visit of Dr. Ignace Claire Gamallo, Pediatric Endocrinology Fellow from the Philippine Children’s Medical Center (PCMC) from December 1 to 15, 2025.
The visit allowed for a collaboration to bridge the gap between clinical practice and the systemic processes of the newborn screening program. By providing direct access to the program’s inner workings, the NSC-NIH is helping to strengthen the expertise of future specialists in managing congenital endocrine disorders.
The training aimed to provide a holistic understanding of the newborn screening lifecycle, from initial collection to long-term management. Key learning objectives include defining the process flow for follow-up and recall, identifying the critical importance of endorsements to continuity clinics, and attaining comprehensive knowledge of ENBS protocols and case-closing procedures. These goals are achieved through a mix of formal lectures, interactive discussions, and direct observation of the recall process, concluding with a feedback and evaluation session.
The NSC-NIH is looking forward to more productive exposure visits from specialists in the future, as their involvement and expertise are vital to the continuous improvement and success of the National Newborn Screening program.
