Strengthening Confirmatory Testing in Newborn Screening: Isabela Province Steps Up

by John Kristoffer B. Sacro, RN

Confirmatory testing is a vital stage in the newborn screening process, requiring meticulous preparation and swift sample transport to ensure accurate diagnoses and timely treatment. These tests are essential for identifying heritable conditions that could lead to serious health complications if left undetected and unmanaged.

In the Province of Isabela, the process faces significant challenges due to the region’s large land area and growing population. A substantial number of newborns require confirmatory testing; however, patients in remote areas often encounter difficulties accessing adequately equipped and staffed healthcare facilities for sample collection.

To address these challenges, the Integrated Provincial Health Office of Isabela, in collaboration with the Department of Health Cagayan Valley Center for Health Development and the Newborn Screening Center–Northern Luzon, conducted a Confirmatory Sample Collection, Packing, and Transport Training on April 2, 2025, for Newborn Screening (NBS) coordinators in the province.

The training covered essential aspects of the process, including patient preparation, accurate sample collection and storage techniques, and the importance of prompt sample transport to ensure reliable test results. Interactive discussions allowed the participants to clarify protocols and address potential challenges in real time. In addition, practical return demonstrations offered healthcare workers a hands-on opportunity to apply their learning under expert supervision, reinforcing adherence to established standards.

This active learning approach equipped participants from various health facilities with the necessary skills and knowledge to manage cases requiring confirmatory testing more effectively. It also promoted a culture of compliance with the best practices across the province.

Driven by a strong commitment to newborn health, the Province of Isabela continues to invest in initiatives that support early diagnosis and intervention. This successful training reflects the unrelenting dedication and collaborative spirit of all stakeholders and program partners—working together to ensure that every newborn has the best possible start in life.
