Stronger Together : One NSCV Family

A shared mission took the center stage for Newborn Screening Center Visayas as we celebrate the 20 years of commitment to ensuring healthier beginnings for every Filipino newborn last February 20, 2026.

The day began with Mother’s Class, an activity organized by WVSUMC NBS Team led by Ms. Loraine L. Aquines, RN, in coordination with Loida S. Arengo, RN, OPD Department Supervisor. Opening the program with her opening remarks was Dr. Karen June Ventilacion, DPPS, Unit Head of NSCV. This session gathered pregnant women, their partners and parents of newborns with positive test results, they were educated with the essential knowledge on Expanded Newborn Screening (ENBS).

A series of lectures then followed: Importance of ENBS was discussed by Ms. Maricor G. Sarmiento, RN (Program Manager, NSCV); Overview of NBS Disorders & Importance of Confirmatory Testing by Ms. Starlene Joy Plaga, RN (Genetic Counselor); and Role of WVSUMC NBS Continuity Clinic in Long-Term Management that was led by Ms. Diana Pondevida, RN (NBSCC Follow-Up Nurse).

Beyond the borders of educating and advocating, a special thanksgiving mass was celebrated at the WVSUMC Chapel which was attended by the NSCV staff and WVSUMC unit heads. The mass was offered for the shared gratitude towards those who have made a commitment to ensuring that every life is cared for. As the event drew to a close, a simple gesture of appreciation was given towards the WVSUMC sections that have contributed towards the fulfillment of the newborn screening services. The celebration concluded with a photo opportunity to mark this momentous occasion— a symbol of unity, teamwork and shared purpose. This serves as a reminder for a journey that still continues. The center remains consistent with the mission: ensuring that every newborn is given a chance to live a healthy life through early detection and timely intervention.
