The primary goal of the Newborn Screening Continuity Clinic (NBSCC) is to ensure the best possible outcomes for individuals diagnosed with conditions identified through newborn screening. Its long-term follow-up program provides high-quality chronic disease management, condition-specific treatment, age-appropriate preventive care, and comprehensive education throughout the individual’s life.
Since July 2022, the NBSCC at Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo Memorial Hospital (GEAMH) has been designated to care for patients with metabolic disorders. Recognizing that the management of these complex conditions requires multidisciplinary expertise, the clinic organized a collaborative metabolic clinic to strengthen patient care.

On May 13, 2025, a multidisciplinary team from the Center for Human Genetics (CHG) joined GEAMH in this effort, composed of Geneticists Dr. Christine Avila, Nutritionist-Dieticians Ms. Jean Ruth Basas and Ms. Catherine Erestein, and Social Worker Mr. Jeremieh Nisperos.
Additional support was provided by pediatric residents Dr. Jasmine Alibucsan and Dr. Camille Martinez, pedia-intern Dr. Dan de Guzman, and nutritionist-dietitian Ms. Karen Ikan, RND, all from GEAMH.

During the clinic, GEAMH physicians conducted initial assessments before referring patients to CHG geneticists, who confirmed clinical findings and addressed immediate concerns. Together, they developed individualized dietary management plans, including both daily nutrition regimens and “sick day” protocols, which were carried out by the dietitians.
A total of 16 patients were evaluated: eight with Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD), four with Phenylketonuria (PKU), two with Galactosemia, one with 6-PTPS Deficiency, and one with Tyrosinemia.
This successful event was made possible through the collaborative efforts of NBSCC, the Cavite Provincial Health Office (PHO), and the Department of Health – Center for Human Development Region IV-A (DOH-CHD4A). The PHO provided the venue, while the DOH-CHD4A sponsored food for staff and patients, along with other logistical needs.
The NBSCC extends its deepest gratitude to all partners for their commitment and support in making this initiative a meaningful and impactful success.
