The Newborn Screening Center–National Institutes of Health (NSC-NIH) proudly welcomed three student interns from the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) System for a two-week immersion program in June 2025. This initiative was part of an annual collaboration led by the National Institutes of Health’s Institute of Human Genetics, aimed at exposing young scholars to real-world applications of science in public health.

During their immersion, the students engaged in a structured program that provided a comprehensive overview of the Center’s key operations—from sample processing and laboratory testing to case follow-up, administrative functions, and health promotion. Their experience also included lectures, laboratory tours, and interactive sessions with team leaders that gave them a deeper understanding of the country’s Newborn Screening Program and its critical role in early diagnosis and intervention.

The internship culminated in a presentation of research outputs or advocacy materials based on the students’ learnings and experiences. This final activity encouraged reflection on the value of health programs and offered an opportunity for students to contribute fresh perspectives to the field.

The NSC-NIH remains committed to capacity-building efforts like this which helps cultivate the next generation of scientists and health advocates. With the continued leadership of the Institute of Human Genetics, the program strengthens academic partnerships and inspires young minds to pursue meaningful careers in science and health.
