Promoting Newborn Screening Awareness in Northernmost Province

by DOH – Central Visayas Center for Health Development

Newborn screening (NBS) plays a crucial role in enhancing neonatal health outcomes by facilitating the early detection and management of specific congenital conditions. As a key component of the country’s comprehensive healthcare system, NBS significantly reduces morbidity, mortality, and long-term disabilities in affected infants.

Recognizing that the first step in the NBS process is motivating parents, the Cagayan Valley Regional Newborn Screening Team created a community-based initiative in Batanes to engage pregnant women and raise awareness about the importance of early screening. Titled “Buntis at NBS, #1 sa Batanes!,” the campaign focused on face-to-face health education during prenatal visits—a proven method for empowering parents.

Empowering Informed Decisions

This initiative aimed to equip expectant mothers with accurate information about newborn screening, address common concerns, and promote timely decisions that prioritize the health of their newborns. Through supportive, community-level interventions, the campaign sought to foster understanding and acceptance of NBS as a critical step in ensuring a child’s healthy future.

On-the-Ground Implementation

Led by Project Development Officers Novelyn C. Lacuanan and Marry Jean S. Tomo, the NBS Regional Team collaborated with the Provincial Health Office of Batanes under Dr. Allan M. Sande and Provincial NBS Coordinator Rizalyn Avanceña to carry out the campaign.

Home teaching sessions were conducted in two municipalities in Batanes. On March 5, 2025, nine pregnant women in Basco participated in one-on-one health education sessions. Similarly, on March 17, 2025, six pregnant women in Sabtang took part in the same type of sessions. As tokens of appreciation, each participant received a package that included a breast pump, hot and cold compresses, and a safe motherhood kit.

Engaging Local Leadership
During the Basco visit, the NBS Regional Team paid a courtesy call to Mayor German Caccam and Barangay Captain Joel Daroca of San Antonio. Their support helped amplify the reach and impact of the initiative within the community.

Through continued collaboration, education, and community engagement, the “Buntis at NBS, #1 sa Batanes!” campaign set a strong example of how localized initiatives can make a lasting impact in even the most remote areas of the country.
